Roof flies off home in Clay City

March 17, 2025

On Saturday, March 15th, the Clay City Fire Department received a call about a roof being blown off from a residence due to high winds. No one was hurt, but it did significant damage to the roof and the homeowner's car.

Pieces of the roof also flew into power lines due to the high winds.

The homeowner starting repairing the roof pretty quickly with the help from others.

Once the Clay County Fire Depart returned to their firehouse from the call, their roof had been damaged by the high winds too while they were away.

During a High Wind Event:

  • Go indoors:
  • Seek shelter in a sturdy building, preferably in an interior room or basement.

  • Stay away from windows:
  • Stay away from windows and exterior walls, as they can be vulnerable to damage.

  • If caught outside:
  • Take cover next to a building or under a shelter if possible.

  • Driving:
  • If you must drive, slow down, hold the steering wheel firmly, and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, especially high-profile vehicles.

  • Beware of debris:
  • Watch out for flying debris, such as tree branches, loose objects, and downed power lines.

  • Downed power lines:
  • If you encounter downed power lines, stay away from them and report them to the local utility company and police.

  • Listen to weather updates:
  • Stay informed about weather conditions and warnings by listening to local news or NOAA Weather Radio.

  • If you are in a mobile home:
  • Evacuate to a sturdy building before the winds pick up or the storm system reaches your location.
