Greta Sue Payne

Greta Sue Payne, 85, a beacon of love and kindness, passed away on May 8, 2025, at Baptist Health in Lexington, Kentucky. She was born on July 18, 1939, in Beattyville, Kentucky to her beloved parents, the late Samuel and Lucy Bowman.

A devout member of the Holy Spirit Parish Newman Center, her faith was a cornerstone of her life. Greta's marriage to Bobby Joe Payne was a sacred testament to their love and devotion, spanning nearly five decades of shared joy and partnership. She also dedicated many years of service as a clerical assistant for the State of Kentucky.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Bobby Joe Payne; children, Teresa Griffee, Nancy Wildman (Rob), Joey Payne (Tina), Elizabeth Payne, and Mickey Payne (Christina); grandchildren, Sarah Broderick, Alex Griffee, Lauren Hammond, Emily Dixon, Michael Payne, Brittany Bird, Christopher Payne, and Brooke Higginbotham; twelve great-grandchildren; sister, Coleen Bradley (Bill); and her brother, Sammy Bowman. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister, Nancy Quinn.

Those who knew Greta will remember her as the epitome of love and kindness, touching the lives of all she encountered. As Mother Teresa wisely said, "Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier." Greta embodied this sentiment in every aspect of her life and leaves a legacy of happiness in her wake.

A funeral mass in Greta's honor will be held at 12:10 PM on Monday, May 12, 2025, at Holy Spirit Parish Newman Center, 320 Rose Lane, Lexington, Kentucky, 40508. Visitation will be held at the church from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Interment will conclude on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at 1:30 PM at Calvary Cemetery in Lexington, Kentucky.
